You Don't Want These Greater Weaver Problems! *Fish Warning*

The UK isn’t known for venomous animals, but we do happen to have a highly venomous species of fish - The Greater Weaver

Recently, on a boat fishing trip out in Dover, we spoke to the captain who mentioned this badman of a fish, and how a sting from it was not only excruciating, but turned his finger black! When it comes to the sting of the Greater Weaver Fish, the pain is very real. If stepped on or touched, the fish can inject venom causing sharp pain, swelling, and redness. In some cases, the discomfort can last for hours or even days. Those who have allergies to certain venoms may experience more severe reactions. This is why wearing protective footwear and gloves when shore fishing is always a good idea.

In the unlikelihood you happen to catch one of these while fishing with us, please shout one of your captains, even if unsure whether it is a Greater Weaver. We’ll try our best to remove it from the hook without touching its stinger - it has three spines in its dorsal fin (on the top) and one each on the operculum (gills).

Once we catch one and cook it up, we’ll let you know how it tastes!
